Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. She created Feminist Frequency, a site with videos and comments analyzing the portrayals of females in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is an educational and non-profit site that analyzes how females are represented within popular culture's narratives. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is her primary goals. But, she also seeks to bring attention to things like discrimination and harassment of women in the online world. Holding a master's degree in the field of political and social thinking at York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaking engagement and has given talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was interested in the gender issue and feminist movements since an early age. In 2009, when she was still enrolled at the University of Toronto, Sarkeesian created the website Feminist Frequency. The woman with ambitions to begin a web series on gender representation in video games and found herself in the middle for an online harassment campaign. The attack did not stop her, rather it bolstered the determination of a feminist critic of media. For the many achievements she's made for women's rights, she's been an award winner.
